💼 General Tax Questions

1. When does tax season start and end?
The IRS typically begins accepting tax returns in late January. The deadline to file federal individual tax returns is April 15 (or the next business day if it falls on a weekend or holiday).

2. What if I can’t file by April 15?
You can file for an extension, which gives you until October 15 to submit your return.
Important: An extension to file is not an extension to pay. Any taxes owed must still be paid by the April deadline to avoid penalties and interest.

3. How do I check the status of my refund?
You can check your refund status on the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool at irs.gov/refunds. You’ll need your Social Security number, filing status, and exact refund amount.

4. How long does it take to receive my refund?
Most refunds are issued within 21 days of e-file acceptance. Paper-filed returns may take up to 8–12 weeks.

5. Can you help me if I live in another state?
Yes! We offer secure, virtual tax preparation services nationwide. You can upload your documents, sign electronically, and receive updates through our client portal.

🧾 Documents & Filing Requirements

6. What documents do I need to file my taxes?
Common documents include:

  • W-2 forms (employment income)

  • 1099 forms (self-employment, interest, unemployment, etc.)

  • ID and Social Security cards (for you and dependents)

  • Prior year tax return (optional but helpful)

  • Proof of deductions (childcare, education, home office, etc.)

We’ll provide a full checklist when you start your return.

7. Can I take photos of my tax documents?
Yes — clear, legible photos or PDFs are acceptable if uploaded through our secure portal. Avoid sending sensitive information by text or social media.

8. Do I need to file if I had little or no income?
You may still benefit from filing to claim refundable credits (like the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit) or to get a refund of withheld taxes.

👨‍👩‍👧 Dependents & Credits

9. Who qualifies as a dependent?
Generally, a qualifying child or relative who meets IRS requirements for age, residency, relationship, and financial support.
We’ll help you determine who qualifies during your intake process.

10. What is the Child Tax Credit (CTC)?
It’s a credit of up to $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17. Income limits apply. The refundable portion may also increase your refund.

11. What is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?
The EITC is for low- to moderate-income workers. The amount depends on income and number of dependents. We’ll calculate your eligibility automatically.

💰 Payments, Fees & Refund Options

12. How are your fees determined?
Fees are based on the complexity of your tax situation, not your refund amount. We’ll always provide an estimate before filing.

13. Do you offer refund advances or bank products?
Yes — eligible clients can choose to receive part of their refund early or have fees deducted from their refund once approved.

14. How do I pay for my tax preparation services?
We accept secure online payments via our client portal, KLARNA via invoice payment. Payment is due prior to e-filing unless using a refund transfer option.

📬 After Filing

15. What happens after I e-file?
You’ll receive an IRS acceptance notice (usually within 24–48 hours). We’ll notify you once it’s approved, and you can then track your refund online.

16. I received a letter from the IRS — what should I do?
Don’t panic. Upload the letter to your client portal or email us immediately. We’ll review it and advise on your next steps.

🔒 Security & Privacy

17. Is my information safe with you?
Absolutely. We use encrypted systems and secure client portals for document sharing, signature, and payment. We never share your data with third parties without consent.
